Women's Basketball Hangs On To Defeat Miami, 69-64

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Miami, 69-64, in BIG EAST Conference action on Saturday, February 23, in Providence, Rhode Island.
Freshman guard/forward Michal Epstein (Rehovot, Israel) led the Friars with 15 points. Freshman forward Jessica Simmonds (South Orange, N.J.) recorded the third double-double of her career, with 13 points and 10 rebounds, and added two blocked shots. Simmonds also matched a career high in assists with three. Graduate student Dani Trippany (Massena, N.Y.) registered 13 points and seven rebounds, while senior Chrissy Vozab (Amenia, N.Y.) netted 10 points.
Martha Bodley led all scorers for Miami with 17 points, and added a team-high six rebounds off the bench. Forward Chanivia Broussard tallied 16 points, and guard Meghan Saake netted 12 points to round out the double-digit scorers for the Hurricanes.
The Hurricanes led at the half, 33-29, despite shooting 36.1 percent from the field (13-36), compared the Friars who shot an impressive 54.5 percent from the floor (12-22). The difference was turnovers as Providence committed 22 turnovers in the first half, and finished with 34 for the game. Miami turned the ball over just 12 times in the first half of play, and finished with 23 for the game.
The first half of play also showcased five ties and eight lead changes, as Miami headed into the lockerroom with it's largest lead of the game (four points), 33-29.
Providence started the second half on a 6-0 run to take over the lead, 35-33, with 18:07 on the clock. At that point, the Hurricanes responded with a 12-6 scoring drive to reclaim their four point advantage, 45-41, with 13:45 remaining. The Friars fought back to take the lead for good at the 9:07 mark, 47-46. PC would have its largest lead of the day (nine points) with 5:49 remaining in the game, 58-49, and held off a late 13-11 scoring rally by Miami to seal the four-point victory, 69-64.
Providence improves to 12-14 overall, and 6-9 in the BIG EAST. Miami falls to 16-10 on the season, and 9-6 in BIG EAST Conference action.
