PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's hockey team upset top-ranked Maine, 4-2, on Friday, January 3 in HOCKEY EAST action at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. The win marked the first time PC has defeated a No. 1 team since February 9, 2001 when the Friars defeated Boston College, 5-3.

The Friars, who had not played since December 5, 2002, jumped ahead, 1-0, at the 8:05 mark of the first period as sophomore David Carpentier (Faribault, Minn.) tucked in a shot past Maine netminder Frank Doyle. For Carpentier, it marked his first goal of the season. Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.) gave PC a 2-0 lead on the power play as he fired a high wrist shot over Doyle's right shoulder at 6:07 of the second period. Junior Peter Zingoni (Newtown, Conn.) struck for the first of his two goals less than three minutes later when he converted on a pass from senior Jon DiSalvatore (S. Windsor, Conn.) to give PC a 3-0 advantage. Zingoni's first goal of the night, which also was assisted by freshman James Pemberton (Cumberland, R.I.), proved to be the game winner. The 6-foot right wing completed the scoring for the Friars at 14:06 of the second. While the Friars were killing a penalty, Zingoni stole the puck and skated alone on Doyle. Zingoni's first shot was saved, but he converted on the rebound for a short-handed and gave the Friars a 4-0 lead.

Maine cut the lead to 4-1 as Francis Nault scored a power-play goal at 15:29. In the third period, Maine outshot the Friars, 14-8. Martin Kariya scored on the man advantage at 11:03 to make the score, 4-2. However, the Black Bears did not get any closer as senior netminder Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.) stopped 32 shots, including 14 in the final period. Doyle made 26 saves for Maine.
