PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's soccer team defeated Pittsburgh, 1-0, in BIG EAST action on Saturday, October 18 at Providence, R.I. Friar junior Carlos Suero (Plantation, Fla.) scored his first goal of the season and the only goal of the game to give the Friars the win.
In the first half, the play went up and down the field with Providence holding the advantage in shots, 5-2. Despite recording five shots the Friars were not able to generate a quality scoring opportunity in the first 45 minutes.
Both teams increased their offensive pressure in the second half. With 9:06 remaining in the game, a Pittsburgh defender was whistled for a foul just outside the top of the box. Friar sophomore Eoin Lynch (Falmouth, Maine) blasted a shot off the indirect kick that hit the wall and deflected to Suero, who lofted a high shot over Pittsburgh goalkeeper Justin Lowery for the only goal of the contest.
Friar junior goalkeeper Jeff Newman (Northboro, Mass.) made four saves while recording his third shutout of the season.
