Providence College Athletics Director Bob Driscoll announced on Monday, November 3 that Bob Deraney, head coach of the women's ice hockey team, and Providence College have agreed to a five-year contract extension.
Deraney, entering his fifth season at Providence, is the second most successful coach in the program's history, posting an 83-43-18 (.639) career record. He guided the women's team to the 2002 ECAC Eastern League title and the 2003 HOCKEY EAST Regular Season and Tournament titles. Three of his four teams have recorded 20 or more wins.
When announcing the extension, Driscoll stated, "Providence College is glad to have such a skilled and dedicated coach to help shape and grow the tradition of women's hockey. We look forward to five more exciting years."
Prior to coaching at Providence, Deraney was a goaltender at Boston University where he played on some of Head Coach Jack Parker's most successful teams, winning the HOCKEY EAST Championship his junior year. He then went on to play minor league hockey for the Johnstown Chiefs of the ECHL and the Flint Spirits of the IHL before starting his coaching career. His first assistant coaching job was at Northeastern followed by three seasons working on the Dartmouth staff, and finally five seasons as the top Assistant Coach at UMass-Amherst.
Deraney, a native of West Roxbury, Mass., currently resides in Shrewsbury, Mass. with his wife and two daughters.
