PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team was defeated by in-state rival Rhode Island, 75-73, in overtime on Friday, December 5 in Providence, R.I. Senior guard Kristin Quinn (Sewell, N.J.) paced the Friar effort with 21 points.
Quinn tied PC's single-game free-throw percentage record as she connected on 14-of-14 attempts from the charity stripe. Junior Quiana Copeland (Mattapan, Mass.) registered the second double-double of her career with 17 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. URI received a 28-point performance from Denise King.
Denise King's 28 points marked a season-high and included 14-straight in the final four minutes of the second half to propell the Rams into overtime, as they defeated Providence, 75-73. Rhode Island (5-2) trailed by as many as 11 points with 5:27 remaining, but King scored 14-straight points in the final four minutes to help the Rams force overtime. Laurisa Ewert finished with 13 points and grabbed five rebounds. Lyndita Liburd added 10 pooints, while Katie Stailing had eight points and eight rebounds.
Trailing 50-39, the Rams went on a 16-7 run over the next four minutes to cut the lead to two with 1:29 remaining. Providence (1-5) upped the lead to 64-59 with 45 seconds left, but the Rams responded with a 7-2 run capped by a free throw by Tanya Rhodes, that tied the game at 66-66 and sent it to overtime.
In the overtime, King put the Rams up 72-69 with a jumper, but a lay-up by Jama Gilmore (Muncie, Ind.) cut URI's lead to one with 49 seconds left. For URI, Laurisa Ewert found Lyndita Liburd on a back-door cut for a lay-up with 23 seconds left that put Rhody back up three and Yolett McPhee hit 1-of-2 free throws to give the Rams a 75-73 lead with 7 seconds left. PC's Gilmore got an open look at a 3-pointer as time ran down, but it was no good giving the Rams the come-from-behind victory.
Senior Brooke Freeburg (Waterford, Pa.) added 11 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Jill Furstenburg (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) contributed 10 points to round out PC's double-digit scorers. Gilmore finished the game with two points and a career-high six rebounds. Junior guard Keisha Blackwell (Baltimore, Md.), Furstenburg and Copeland all fouled-out for Providence. Three URI players also were disqualified from the game with five fouls.
Providence College (1-5) will host Northeastern in non-conference women's basketball action on Monday, December 8. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 7:30 p.m. at Alumni Hall's Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I.
