BOSTON, Mass. -- The Providence College men's hockey team skated to a 3-3 overtime tie versus No. 9 Boston University on Saturday, February 22 at Walter Brown Arena in Hockey East action.
The Friars opened the scoring at 6:08 of the first period as junior Mike Robinson won a faceoff in the Boston University zone to freshman Torry Gajda (Westfield, Mass.) who fired a quick shot that beat BU netminder Sean Fields. The Terriers tied the game at 1-1 as Mark Mullen scored a power-play goal from the slot at 15:54.
In the second period, the Terriers took a 2-1 lead at 5:04 as Mullen scored again, this time while BU was short-handed. The short-handed tally marked the first time since February 23, 2002 that the Friars gave up a short-handed goal, which came against Boston University. However, the Friars responded 26 seconds later as senior Devin Rask (Parkside, Sask.) fired a wrist shot that was redirected by senior Jon DiSalvatore (S. Windsor, Conn.) at 5:26 for his career-high 17th goal of the season. The Friars regained the lead at the 10:44 mark as senior Mike Lucci's redirected shot bounced off a Terrier skate into the net.
The Terriers tied the game at 10:04 of the third period with their second power-play goal of the night as Brian McConnell coverted on a pass from Frantisek Skladany. In overtime, the Terriers nearly won the game with 42 seconds remaining, but PC netminder Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.) stopped BU's David VanderGulik on a wrap around attempt. Schaefer finished with 34 saves.
The Friars return to action on Friday, February 28 as they will play UMass Lowell in the final regular season game.
