PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's hockey team scored four goals in the first period and never looked back en route to a 6-1 victory over UMass Lowell in Hockey East action at Tsongas Arena on Friday, February 7. Junior Stephen Wood (Sudbury, Mass.) led the Friars with two goals and one assist.
The Friars opened the scoring at 4:37 of the first period as Wood fired a back hand from just outside the right faceoff circle that eluded River Hawk freshman netminder Dominic Smart who was screened in front of the net. The Friars erupted for three more goals within a span of 1:42 to take a 4-0 lead. Junior Cody Loughlean (Innisfail, Alta.) scored his seventh goal of the season at 12:17, senior Mike Lucci (Parma, Ohio) added his fourth goal of the season at 13:05 and senior Jon DiSalvatore (S. Windsor, Conn.) completed the three-goal fury at 13:59 for his 12th of the season.
In the second period, the Friars increased their lead to 5-0 as Wood scored his second of the night and his seventh of the season as he pounced on a rebound in front of the net at 3:45. The River Hawks finally got on the board as senior Mark Concannon (Hull, Mass.) wristed a shot past PC senior Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.) at 4:15. Rask added his 17th goal of the season to complete the scoring at 2:46 of the third period.
Schaefer made 28 saves to earn his ninth win of the season. Fifteen of his 28 saves came in the third period.
The Friars return to action on Sunday, February 9 in a Hockey East game against No. 4 New Hampshire at Schneider Arena. The game will be televised on Fox Sports New England.
