The Providence College women's soccer team defeated rival Rhode Island University on Sunday, September 21, 1-0, in Providence, R.I.
The Friars got on the board in the 25th minute when junior BriAnne Bruni (Bristol, Conn.) tallied her third goal of the season. Bruni received a cross from fellow junior Lauren Ritchie (Sayville, N.Y.) and fired the ball into the lower right corner past the Ram's freshman keeper Melissa Bargione. Rhode Island controlled play for much of the second half but were unable to get anything by senior goaltender Caroline Haines (Stillwater, Minn.). Haines made three saves as the Friars and Rams tallied 11 shots each.
With the victory, the Friars improve to 5-2-1 on the season, while Rhode Island falls to 2-4-0. Providence returns to action on Wednesday, September 24 as they open BIG EAST Conference action at home versus Boston College at 4:00 p.m. at Glay Field.
