PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College cross country will host the Providence College Invitational on Friday, September 5 at Goddard Park in Warwick, R.I. The women's race will begin at 3:00 p.m., while the men's race will start at 4:00 p.m.
In the women's tri-meet, the Friars will race against New Hampshire and Rhode Island.
Despite losing Roisin McGettingan (Wicklow, Ireland) to graduation last season, the Friars will have a strong team in 2003. Providence is led by junior All-American Mary Cullen (Sligo, Ireland) who helped the Friars to a sixth-place finish at the 2002 NCAA Cross Country Championship in Terre Haute, Ind. Cullen placed 28th overall to earn All-America honors. PC's sixth-place finish was the school's best since 1997, when it also finished sixth. In 1995, the Friars captured the NCAA title under the tutelage of Head Coach Ray Treacy.
The Friars also will rely on junior Kimberly Smith (Auckland, New Zealand). Smith will make an immediate impact on the Providence team after competing in the 2003 World Cross Country Championships in Switzerland. Deirdre Byrne (Avoca, Ireland) returns for her junior season with the Friars after a strong year in 2002, in which she finished 71st overall at the NCAA Championship. Senior Lisa Cappello (Lockport, N.Y.) and sophomore Fiona Crombie (Christchurch, New Zealand) round out the list of PC's top five runners. Cappello has competed in two NCAA Championships, including last season when she finished 171st overall. Crombie begins her first season with the cross country squad after competing with the track team last season.
The Wildcats enter the 2003 season after finishing third in the America East Championship in 2002. UNH also earned a fourth-place finish at the ECAC's. The Wildcats return five seniors from last season's team, including co-captain Lesley Read (Dover, N.H.) who placed third overall at the ECAC's and recorded an eighth-place finish at the America East Championships.
Last season, Rhode Island finished third at the Atlantic 10 Championships and earned an 11th-place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship. The Rams are led by sophomore Kristen Coon (Webster, N.Y.) who was named the Most Outstanding Rookie following her fifth-place finish at the Atlantic 10 Championships.
The men's race will be a quad-meet, featuring Connecticut, New Hampshire, Providence and Rhode Island.
Last season, the Providence men finished 13th at the NCAA Cross Country Championship and second at the BIG EAST Championship. The Friars lost two-time All-American Adam Sutton (Preston, England) to graduation, but will have a talented team in 2003. PC is led by three juniors in Dylan Wykes (Kingston, Ont.), Patrick Guidera (Clonmel, Ireland) and Patrick Moulton (Pelham, N.H.). Wykes, Guidera and Moulton each have competed in two NCAA Cross Country Championships. Last season, Wykes was PC's third highest finisher (109th) at the NCAA's despite falling. Moulton garnered a 154th-place finish, while Guidera placed 158th.
Connecticut is led by junior Pat Blake (Lebanon, Conn.) who was the team's highest finisher (60th) at the BIG EAST Championship last season. The Huskies also are led by seniors Alex Hudimatch (Watertown, Conn.) and Bereshith Adams (Roselle, N.J.). Hudimatch and Adams each competed at the 2002 BIG EAST Championship and finished 76th and 84th, respectively.
New Hampshire has captured the America East Conference Championship four out of the last five seasons. The Wildcats return three of the top five runners in the America East Conference from last season's team that won its second consecutive crown. Junior Steven Meinelt (Topsfield, Mass.), sophomore Tony Truax (Dover, N.H.) and junior Peter Mallett (Manchester, N.H.) finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively at the American East Championship last season. In addition to the America East crown, the Wildcats captured two other meets in 2002.
Rhode Island is led by sophomores Andrew Poland (North Scituate, RI) and John Hoffman (Fort Plain, N.Y.). The duo helped the Rams to a 31st-place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship last season as each was the team's top finishers.
