Women's Ice Hockey Downs Connecticut, 3-1

The Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated the University of Connecticut, 3-1, on Saturday, January 17 at UConn Ice Arena in Storrs, Conn.

The Friars offense continued its streak as they got on the board first for the third straight game. Freshman Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) scored her third goal of the season at 3:24 of the first period with assists going to junior Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) and senior Darlene Stepheson (Virden, Manitoba).

Sophomore goaltender Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) helped keep Providence afloat in the second period as the Huskies had several scoring opportunities. Bugden stopped a Connecticut breakaway early in the period and then robbed Megan McLeod as she dove across the crease to make a blocker save as the Connecticut player had a wide-open net on a five-on-three power play. Providence was unable to kill off the second penalty, however, as Tiffany Owens scored at the 14:23 mark as she was able to push the puck under Bugden from a scrum in front of the net. The Friars put two more points on the board in the third Stephenson scored on the power play at 6:22 of the period and junior Hilary Greaves (Cranston, R.I.) put the game out of reach with an empty-net tally with 12 seconds remaining.

Providence outshot Connecticut, 35-18. Bugden made 17 saves for the Friars as they improved to 7-8-2 overall on the season and 3-1-1 in HOCKEY EAST, while Shannon Murphy made 32 saves for the Huskies as they fell to 6-11-3 overall and 2-3-1 in HOCKEY EAST.

Providence College returns to action on Wednesday, January 21 as they host No. 2 Dartmouth at Schneider Arena at 7:00 p.m.
