Women's Ice Hockey Falls to Northeastern, 2-1

The Providence College women's ice hockey team was defeated by Northeastern University, 2-1, on Sunday, January 25 at Matthews Arena in Boston, Mass.

The Friars and Huskies played a scoreless first period in which both teams tested each other but could not capitalize on their chances. The second period began with the Friars short handed and the Huskies looking to take the lead. Sophomore goaltender Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) robbed Northeastern of a sure goal as she dove across the crease, stacking her pads to stop Crystal Rochon's scoring chance. Freshman Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) scored her fourth goal of the season at the six minute mark of the second period, as she was able to jam a rebound past Northeastern's goaltender Chanda Gunn. Junior Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) and senior Darlene Stephenson (Virden, Manitoba) each had an assist on the goal.

Providence continued to out chance the Huskies in the third but could not increase their lead as Gunn was up to the challenge. Northeastern finally got the puck past Bugden late in the third period as Amy Goodney scored on a one-timer fron the slot at 13:22 of the period. Cyndy Kenyon scored the game-winner for the Huskies at 17:09 as she was able to jam the puck under Bugden who thought she had it trapped under her body.

Providence outshot Northeastern, 36-19. Bugden made 17 saves for the Friars as they drop to 7-10-2 overall on the season and 3-2-1 in HOCKEY EAST, while Chanda Gunn made 35 saves for the Huskies as they improve to 9-5-6 overall and 3-3-2 in HOCKEY EAST.

Providence College returns to action on Saturday, January 31 as they travel to Durham, N.H. to take on the Wildcats of the University of New Hampshire at the Whittemore Center at 2:00 p.m.
