Women's Hockey Unable to Hold Off Colgate, 2-1

HAMILTON, N.Y. (October 17, 2004) -- The Providence College women's hockey team closed out their two-game away series with a 2-1 loss to Colgate on Sunday, October 17 at Starr Rink in Hamilton, N.Y. The Friars evened the series, 1-1 with a 6-2 victory over the Raiders on Saturday, October 16.

Amanda Barre led the way for Colgate as the only Raider to put the puck in the net. After a scoreless first period, Barre scored at 2:06 in the second with a pass from Allison Paiano and Becky Irvine. At the 3:17 mark of the third period, Barre scored again, as she posted her second goal of the game and her first game-winning goal of the season. Chelsey Rhodes was credited the assist, while Paiano recorded her second of the game and third for the season.

The Friars pushed forward in the third period with a power-play goal by Hilary Greaves (Cranston, R.I.) at the 7:05 mark. Freshman Kathleen Smith (Waterloo, Ontario) and junior Katelynn Laffin (Norwell, Mass.) registered their first assists of the season on the play.

Colgate's defense stood strong the rest of the period as they kept the Friars off the board.

Providence went 1-10 in the power play, while Colgate went 2-10. The Friars outshot the Raiders 34-21 as Radiers' senior goaltender Rebecca Lahar posted 33 saves, while senior Amy Thomas (Austin, Texas) recorded 19.

Providence returns home on Saturday, October 23 and Sunday, October 24 to face Vermont in non-conference action at 2:00 p.m. at PC's Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I.
