PROVIDENCE, R.I. (October 23, 2004) -- The Providence College women's hockey team opened their regular season home schedule with a 2-1 victory over Vermont on Saturday, October 23 at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. The Friars improved to 2-1, while Vermont drops to 1-4-1 on the season.
Sophomore Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) led the Friars as she scored two goals, one in each of the first two periods of play. Senior captain Danielle Bourgette (Anaheim, Calif.) assisted Watrous on her first goal of the game at 13:57. Junior Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.) and senior Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) gave Watrous her second goal of the game at the 6:34 mark of the second period.
The Catamounts fought back late in the third period as junior Hilary Johnson scored her second goal of the season with an assist from senior Jackie Duerr. Vermont surged forward with an extra skater after pulling the goalie with less than two minutes remaining. The Friars' defense withstood Vermont for the remaining two minutes, as the game ended 2-1.
The Catamounts went 0-4 in the power play, while Providence went 1-12 and outshot Vermont 37-10.
Senior goaltender Amy Thomas (Austin, Texas) grabbed nine saves, while senior Amy Cote posted 35 saves on the night including 14 in the second period.
Watrous (three goals, two assists) and Thatcher (two goals, three assists) currently lead the Friars with five points each on the season.
Providence returns home on Sunday, October 24 to complete the home series versus Vermont at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. at 2:00 p.m.
