PROVIDENCE, R.I. (October 24, 2004) -- The Providence College women's hockey team closed out their home series against Vermont, with a 5-0 shutout victory on Sunday, October 24 at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I.
The Friars dominated play as they outshot the Catamounts 55-16.
Senior Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) scored the game-winning goal on a power play at the 5:33 mark of the first period. The goal was assisted by senior Mara Amrhein (Waukesha, Wis.) and sophomore Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.). Junior Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.) and freshman Kathleen Smith (Waterloo, Ontario), assisted Watrous with her fourth goal of the season during the first period. Junior Katelynn Laffin (Norwell, Mass.) tallied a goal on the scoreboard ending the first period, 3-0. Laffin's goal was assisted by senior Hilary Greaves (Cranston, R.I.) and freshman Jenna Keilch (Clinton Township, Mich.).
The Friars continued to apply offensive pressure, as Thatcher scored her third and fourth goals of the season in the second and third period. Zimmerman and Watrous posted assists on each of the goals.
Vermont went 0-9 in the power play, while Providence went 2-11.
Vermont goaltender Kami Cote posted 50 saves on the night, including 22 in the first period. Senior Amy Thomas (Austin, Texas) grabbed 14 saves as she posted her first shutout of the season.
Watrous and Thatcher lead the Friars with eight points on four goals and four assists on the season.
Providence returns home on Saturday, November 6 versus Princeton at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. at 2:00 p.m.
