PROVIDENCE, R.I. (October 24, 2004) -- The Providence College women's soccer team was defeated, 2-1, by St. John's University on Sunday, October 24 at PC's Glay Field.
The Friars dominated much of the first half, outshooting the Red Storm, 8-5. Providence struck first in the 32nd minute when senior BriAnne Bruni (Bristol, Conn.) tallied her team-leading eighth goal of the season. Freshman Lauren Vecchione (Sudbury, Mass.) played a long lofting ball from midfield and Bruni was able to run onto the ball before heading it past St. John's goaltender Jaime Beran.
The Red Storm tied the game in the 58th minute when Kaitlin Schmidt dribbled by two PC defenders before firing a shot from 10 yards out that eluded PC goaltender Ashley Fedyshyn (Lincroft, N.J.). St. John's scored the game winner in the 80th minute as Susan Byrne headed the ball off of Erinn Flaherty's corner kick.
Fedyshyn made five saves for the Friars, while Beran stopped seven shots as both teams recorded 13 shots each.
