Providence, R.I. - The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated, 3-1, by Northeastern on Sunday, November 14 in Hockey East action at Schneider Arena. Providence fell to 4-5 overall and 2-4 in the league, while Northeastern improved to 5-3-1 overall and 2-0 in the league.
Brian Swiniarski gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead on the power play as his shot from the bottom of the left face off circle eluded PC goalie David Cacciola (Burlington, Mass.) at the 15:44 mark of the first period.
The Huskies increased their lead to 2-0 at the 12:52 mark of the second period. Lewis Yale was able to control the loose puck at center ice and skated in on a two-on-one rush before making a pass to Bryan Esner, who slid the puck past Cacciola for his third goal of the season.
The Friars had several chances to score in the second period, including two breakaway attempts but Keni Gibson was strong in net for Northeastern. Providence out shot the Huskies, 17-13, in the second period and 37-27 for the game. Gibson stopped 36 shots and earned the game's first star. Cacciola also was solid for the Friars as he made 24 saves.
However, the Friars were able to score on Gibson early in the third period. Freshman Jon Rheault (Deering, N.H.) followed his initial shot that was stopped by Gibson and scored his third of the season with just 53 second gone in the period. Junior James Pemberton (Cumberland, R.I.) also assisted on the goal.
Providence controlled much of the third period, out shooting the Huskies, 8-2, but they could not score the equalizer. Jason Guerriero sealed the victory with an empty-net goal at 19:56.
Providence will return to action on Friday, November 19 against top-ranked Boston College at Schneider Arena.
