Providence, R.I. - Providence College junior Torry Gajda (Westfield, Mass.) scored his first goal of the season with 2:37 remaining in the third period as the Providence College men's hockey team skated to a 2-2 overtime tie against No. 1 Boston College on Friday, November 19 at Schneider Arena.
The Friars had a strong third period as they outshot the Eagles, 16-6, but Boston College took a 2-1 lead at the 8:10 mark of the third period when Stephen Gionta scored off assists from Patrick Eaves and Andrew Alberts. The Friars kept the pressure and were rewarded at 17:23 when freshman Jon Rheault's shot was saved, but Gajda pounced on the rebound to tie the game.
Providence grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first period as senior Tom Gallagher (Concord, Mass.) recorded his first collegiate goal at 7:50. Senior Nate Meyers (Maple Glen, Pa.) skated around the BC net before he tried to tuck the puck past netminder Cory Schneider. Schneider made the initial save, but Gallagher took advantage of the rebound to give PC the advantage.
Boston College tied the game at 12:48 of the first period as Dave Spina tallied his fourth goal of the season.
Both teams struggled on the power play as the Eagles failed to convert on eight chances, while Providence went 0-for-6. Freshman goalie Tyler Sims (Forth Worth, Texas) made 35 saves in net for the Friars, while Schneider stopped 28 shots. BC outshot PC, 37-30.
Providence is back in action on Sunday, November 21 as they travel to Portland, Maine for a 2:00 p.m matchup against the 12th-ranked Black Bears.
