Box Score

The Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated the University of Connecticut, 3-1, on Saturday, February 14 at the UConn Ice Arena in Storrs, Conn.

In a first period that started off under Connecticut control, sophomore goaltender Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) kept Providence in the game as they were outshot, 4-0, in the first three minutes. The Friars used Bugden's strong play to work their way into the game. At 12:47 of the period it paid off as senior Darlene Stephenson (Virden, Manitoba) netted her eighth goal of the season to put Providence ahead, 1-0. Stephenson fired the puck high glove-side on the Connecticut keeper after receiving the puck from junior Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) and freshman Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.). The Friars extended their lead just over two minutes later as freshman Kristin Gigliotti (Sauquoit, N.Y.) scored her first collegiate goal from the point with the assists going to Stephenson and senior Meredith Roth (Dubuque, Iowa). Connecticut outshot Providence, 13-6 in the period.

The second period started like the first as the Huskies controlled play. Bugden, again tried to hold Connecticut off the board and wait for the Friars to regroup. At 12:14 of the period Tiffany Owens came in alone on a breakaway that Bugden was able to kick harmlessly away to the corner. The Huskies kept coming, however, and were finally able to crack the Friar defense as Bugden left a rebound that found Owen's stick as she was alone and unmarked in the slot. Providence had several opportunities but were unable to capitalize on them as they outshot Connecticut, 11-10.

The third period was a back-and-forth battle. Each team had several opportunities to score but were denied by solid goaltending. Sophomore Katelynn Laffin (Norwell, Mass.) dug the puck out from along the boards and hit senior Kelli Halcisak (Grosse Ile, Mich.) as she was in full flight out of the zone with a tape-to-tape pass. Halcisak pulled the lone defender to her as she moved towards the goal and got off a shot that Shannon Murphy was able to get a pad on. Freshman Kristen Porter (Ayer, Mass.) pounced on the puck and wristed it past Murphy to put the game out of reach.

Providence was outshot by Connecticut, 35-28. Bugden made 34 saves for the Friars as they improved to 11-11-2 overall on the season and 7-3-1 in HOCKEY EAST, while Murphy made 25 saves for the Huskies as they fell to 8-14-5 overall and 4-6-3 in HOCKEY EAST.

Providence College returns to action on Sunday, February 15 as they host Connecticut at Schneider Arena at 7:00 p.m.
