Women's Hockey Surges Past Connecticut, 4-3

STORRS, Conn. -- Freshman Kelli Doolin (Dorchester, Mass.) scored her fifth goal of the season and her first career game-winner in the third period to defeat Connecticut, 4-3, on Saturday, January 15 at the Freitas Ice Forum in Storrs, Conn. Providence improves to 10-0 when leading after the first period, and improve to 5-0 in HOCKEY EAST play.

The Friars scored early with a goal by sophomore Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.), assisted by junior Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.) and senior Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.).

The Huskies responded quickly and tied the game, 1-1, within the first minute of the second period. Team captain Shannon Connolly netted a goal on the power play at 00:54. Senior Tiffany Owens assisted on the play.

Elizabeth Gallinaro gave the Huskies a 2-1 advantage with her second career goal at 12:52. Seniors Jacquelyn McGuire and Megan McLeod assisted on the play.

Providence struck again with a goal at 15:45 that tied the score, 2-2. Freshman Jenna Keilch (Clinton Township, Mich.) netted her second goal of the season with an assist by Friars' team captain Danielle Bourgette (Anaheim, Calif.).

Early in the third period, Doolin shot the puck near the right face-off circle that hit the pipe. Zimmerman rebounded the puck and slapped it past UConn netminder Kaitlyn Shain for the goal at 2:59.

At 8:58, the Friars stayed on top for good with Doolin's fifth goal of the season. Providence held the lead, 4-2, midway through the third period. Zimmerman posted her 21st assist of the season on the play.

Connecticut's offense continued to surge as Jaclyn Hawkins, Connecticut's leading scorer, recorded her 11th goal of the season with assists from Caitlin Salazer and Tiffany Owens.

Providence outshot the Huskies, 42-29, while going 0-4 on the power play. The Friar penalty-kill unit went 5-6 in the victory. Goaltender Amy Thomas (Austin, Texas) posted 26 saves, while Shain tallied 38.

Providence will host Connecticut tomorrow afternoon at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. Face-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
