ERIE, Pa. (January 8, 2005) -- The Providence College women's hockey team defeated fifth-ranked Mercyhurst College, 3-2, on January 8, at Mercyhurst Ice Center in Erie, Pa. Junior Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.) and senior Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) each tallied two assists in the victory.

Senior Christina Redmond (Dorchester, Mass.) tallied her first assist of the season to freshman Rachel Crissy (Naperville, Ill.) at 17:25 of the first period. Freshman Cherie Hendrickson was awarded an assist on the play as well. Mercyhurst fought back and evened the score 1-1, at 16:49 of the second period. Samantha Shirley netted her fifth goal of the season with assists from Michelle Bonello and Chrissy Yule.

The Lakers took the lead, 2-1, at 4:52 of the third period when Stefanie Bourbeau scored her sixth goal of the season. Teresa Marchese and Jill Nugent assisted on the play. Exactly two minutes later, sophomore Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) tied the game, 2-2, and posted her 11th goal of the season. Zimmerman and Thatcher assisted on the goal.

Providence kept on the offensive late in the third period. Sophomore Kristin Gigliotti (Saquoit, N.Y.) posted her first game-winning goal of the season at 10:40. Zimmerman and Thatcher posted their 17th and 10th assists of the season on the goal.

Amy Thomas (Austin, Texas) recorded 29 saves, while Desirae Clark had a game-high 31. The Friars outshot Mercyhurst 34-31, while Providence (0-7) and Mercyhurst (0-8) went scoreless on the power play. The Friars continue to be an unbeaten team (8-0-2) when leading after the first period of play.

"When we play more consistently, we make plays that build momentum and win more games," said Head Coach Bob Deraney. "We need to play a full sixty minutes, and that is what we did today."

Providence continues non-conference play on the road against Niagara University on Sunday, January 9 at Robert Concetta Dwyer Arena in Niagara, N.Y. Face-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
