SYRACUSE, N.Y. - On Sunday, October 9, the Providence College women's soccer team defeated Syracuse by a score of 1-0. Freshman Kelly Pettersen (Massapequa, N.Y.) netted the game's only goal at the 9:22 mark and sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Fedyshyn (Lincroft, N.J.) posted her third shutout of the season, leading the Friars to their first conference win.
PC's goal came off a corner kick by sophomore Ashley Amaral (Cumberland, R.I.) who sent the ball to the front of the net where classmate Danielle Wieneke's (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) header was touched in by Pettersen. The Orange had one of their best chances to even up the score in the 17th minute when Amanda Arcuri broke through two PC defenders to find herself in front of the net. Just as she was setting up for a shot, a sliding Fedyshyn grabbed the ball off her feet to eliminate any chance of a Syracuse goal. The Orange had plenty of other opportunities to get a first-half equalizer, including three consecutive corner kicks in the 41st minute, but failed to put anything together and headed into halftime down by a goal.
In the second half, Syracuse held a 5-1 corner kick advantage but was unable to put anything past Fedyshyn who made a total of seven saves throughout the game.
With the win, the Friars (4-7-2 /1-4-2 BIG EAST) return to action on Friday, October 14 when they travel to DePaul for a 4:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) match against the Blue Demons.
