BRONX, N.Y. - The Providence College women's cross country team competed at the 2005 BIG EAST Cross Country Championship on Friday, October 28 at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y. PC senior Fiona Crombie (Christchurch, New Zealand) won the individual conference title, finishing first in a time of 20:50. The Friars finished second in the final team standings with 59 points, behind a very talented Notre Dame squad, that captured the BIG EAST crown with 34 points.
Crombie's victory at the BIG EAST Championship marks the third-consecutive year that a member of Providence's squad has won the event title. In 2003 and 2004, former Friar great Kim Smith won the BIG EAST individual title. Crombie, a 2004 All-America selection in cross-country, becomes the sixth Friar on the women's side all-time to have won a BIG EAST individual title in cross country. It is the ninth individual cross country title overall by a Providence student-athlete in the 24-year history of the BIG EAST Women's Cross Country Championship. On the men's side, PC senior Martin Fagan (Mullingar, Ireland) won the men's BIG EAST individual title. Together, Crombie and Fagan, become the third Providence duo to win both the men's and women's BIG EAST individual titles in the same year. In 1998, Ben Noad and Sarah Dupre captured the individual cross country titles at the BIG EAST Championship, while Mark Carroll and Marie McMahon were the first Providence runners to win the event in the same year during the 1995 championship.
"The weather conditions were perfect for today," Crombie said. "When we started out it was a steady race - not too fast, not too slow. As we hit the downhill we started to spread out. Toward the finish several members of the lead group started sprinting, but I held back because the course is deceiving and I thought we were still a little too far out. I was able to pull ahead when I began my sprint."
Junior Meghan Owen (Danielson, Conn.) was the second Friar to finish at the championship and cracked the top-10, finishing in 10th-place overall in a time of 21:37. Graduate student Aine Hoban (Wakefield, England), freshman Katie DiCamillo (Garden City, N.Y.) and senior Katie Twarog (Albany, N.Y.) rounded out the Friar runners who scored for Providence. Hoban finished 12th in a time of 21:43. DiCamillo completed the event in a time of 21:57 and placed 15th, while Twarog finished 22nd in a time of 22:13. Senior Ashley Jensen (Lincoln, R.I.) finished 36th (22:31) and sophomore Michelle Childs (Cameron, Ontario) placed 39th (22:37). Crombie, Owen, Hoban and DiCamillo each earned All-BIG EAST honors by finishing among the top-15 overall at the championship.
The second-place team finish by the Friars in 2005, marks the 13th time in the 24-year history of the BIG EAST Women's Cross Country Championship that Providence has either won the title or finished as the runner-up (second place), including each of the last three years. Providence captured the team title in 2004 and finished second in 2003. The Friars have not finished lower than fourth in the team standings since 1984.
"Fiona put together a great race," said Providence Head Coach Ray Treacy. "It all came together for her today. We are very excited about our performance and looking forward to the NCAAs."
