NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. -- The Providence College men's hockey team won its third consecutive game, defeating Merrimack, 5-1, on Friday, October 28 at Lawler Arena in North Andover, Mass. With the win the Friars improved to 3-2 overall and 3-0 in Hockey East play. It marks the first time since the 1998-99 season that the Friars have started the season with a 3-0 mark in league play. Merrimack fell to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in Hockey East.
Providence took a 2-0 first period lead as sophomore Jon Rheault (Deering, N.H.) scored his second and third goals of the season. Junior Jamie Carroll (Andover, Conn.) came through the right circle and made a cross ice pass to Rheault who tapped the puck into the net at 13:45. Junior Chase Watson (Media, Pa.) also assisted on the goal. Carroll and Watson also setup PC's second goal at 17:44 as Rheault pounced on a rebound from the slot and fired a shot past Merrimack's Jim Healey.
In the second period, the Friars increased their lead to 3-0 on the power play when Watson fired a high wrist shot over Healey's right shoulder at 8:59. However, Merrimack cut the Friars' lead to 3-1 with a power-play goal of their own at 11:31, as Jordan Black redirected a shot past PC goalie Tyler Sims (Fort Worth, Texas). Merrimack's goal ended Sims' shutout streak at 159:05. Sims finished with 24 saves.
The Friars responded at 15:42 when Rheault made a pass from behind the net to senior James Pemberton (Cumberland, R.I.), who fired the puck into the empty net. Providence added another goal in third period as junior Colin McDonald (Wethersfield, Conn.) scored his third goal os the season at 4:25. Freshman Matt Taormina (Washington Township, Mich.) picked up the assist on the goal for his first collegiate point.
