PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College freshman defenseman Cody Wild (North Providence, R.I.) scored with nine seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Friar hockey team to a 2-1 victory over St. Thomas (New Brunswick) on Saturday in an exhibition game at Schneider Arena.
Wild took advantage of a loose puck in the neutral zone and skated on a breakaway before snapping a high wrist shot over St. Thomas goalie Andrew Sim at 4:51 of overtime.
The Tommies opened the scoring at 2:26 of the second period as Jeffrey Bateman scored on the power play. Richard Power and Paul Giallonardo assisted on the goal. Just over five minutes later the Friars also capitalized on the man advantage to tie the game, 1-1. Senior defensemen James Pemberton (Cumberland, R.I.) ripped a one-timer from just inside the blue line that eluded Sim. Junior Chase Watson (Media, Pa.) and senior Torry Gajda (Westfield, Mass.) assisted on the goal.
The Friar goaltending tandem of sophomore Tyler Sims (Fort Worth, Texas) and freshman Stephen Ritter (Tenafly, N.J.) held the Tommies to one goal on 32 shots. Sims made 23 saves in two periods of action, while Ritter stopped all eight shots he faced in the third period and overtime.
Sim also had a strong game for the Tommies, as he stopped 30 shots.
The Friars will begin regular season action on Friday, October 14 at Clarkson.
