PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie with Seton Hall in BIG EAST action on Saturday, October 8 at Providence, R.I. Friar sophomore defender Matt Otte (East Lyme, Conn.) scored his first career goal to help Providence earn the tie.

Seton Hall entered the game having scored 11 goals in its last two games. However, it was the Friar offense that generated more scoring opportunities in the first half, out shooting the Pirates, 8-4. The Friars were able to score the first goal of the game with 58 seconds remaining in the first half when Otte stood uncovered in front of the goal. Sophomore Ryan Maduro (Bristol, R.I.) crossed the ball to senior Eoin Lynch (Yarmouth, Maine), who trapped the cross and sent a pass to Otte that he kicked into the far left corner of the net.

Despite playing into a strong head wind, Seton Hall picked up its play in the second half. The Pirates forced a 1-1 tie in the 76th minute on a goal by Christos Zisimatos. Seton Hall's Sacha Kljestan took a free kick and passed into Zisimatos, who trapped the ball put a shot past Friar goalkeeper Chris Konopka (Toms River, N.J.).

Neither team was able to score over the final 14 minutes of regulation and the Friars entered their seventh overtime game of the season. In the first overtime period, freshman Tim Ritter (Weston, Mass.) had the best scoring chance when he stole the ball in the Seton Hall box, broke in and put a shot past the far corner of the net in the 95th minute.

Konopka recorded two saves in the second overtime period and finished the game with six stops. Seton Hall goalkeeper Boris Pardo recorded three saves.

"This was a very hard earned point against a good Seton Hall team," Friar Head Coach Chaka Daley said. "They have a couple of very special players that caused some problems for us at times. Overall, I thought we did a good job keeping them in check. I am proud of our guys for hanging in there. We had some opportunities on offense, but we were not able to finish it off. It was another tie, but those points are valuable."

The Friars will return to action on Tuesday, October 11 at Brown at 7:00 p.m.
