Men's Hockey Game Notes Vs. No. 11 Colgate

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College men's hockey will host the Holiday Hockey Classic on December 21-22 at Schneider Arena. On Wednesday, December 21, the first game will feature Brown versus Sacred Heart at 4:00 p.m., while the second contest will have Providence College against Colgate at 7:30 p.m. The consolation game will be at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 22, while the Championship game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. All four games will be televised on Cox Sports TV3.

Brown (2-8-1) and Sacred Heart (8-6-1) both will look to end their three game losing streak when they face each other on December 21. In their last game, the Bears held a 1-0 lead at No. 10 Maine after two periods, but Maine came back with two goals in the third period to earn the win. The Bears are led in scoring by sophomore Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, Mich.) who has nine points (five goals, four assists). In goal, sophomore Adam D'Alba (Glencoe, Ill.) has played in 10 games and has posted a 2-7-1 record, a 3.39 goals against average and a .890 save percentage.

In its last game, Sacred Heart was defeated, 3-2, at Connecticut on December 9. The Pioneers held a 2-0 first period lead, but the Huskies responded with three goals in the second period and held on for the win. The Pioneers are currently third in the Atlantic Hockey standings with a 6-5-1 league mark. Sacred Heart's last win came on December 2, a 4-3 overtime triumph at Rensselaer. Junior Pierre-Luc O'Brien (Nicolet, Que.) leads the team in scoring with 22 points (eight goals, 14 assists), while classmate Jason Smith (St. Lambert, Que.) has seen the bulk of the action in goal. Smith has a 7-6-1 record, a 2.31 goals against average and a .923 save percentage.

No. 11 Colgate and No. 17 Providence College will square off in the second game of the tournament on December 21. The Raiders are on a six-game unbeaten streak, including three consecutive wins. In its last game on December 3, Colgate came back from a 2-0 deficit and defeated Princeton, 3-2, in Hamilton, N.Y. The win improved the Raiders' record to 10-2-3, marking their best start after 15 games since the 1962-63 season. The Raiders are currently second in the ECACHL standings with a 6-1-1 league mark, but they have played three fewer games than first-place Harvard. Colgate is led in scoring by sophomore Jesse Winchester (Long Sault, Ont.) who has a team high 23 points (10 goals, 13 assists), while classmate Tyler Burton (Langley, B.C.) has 22 points (13 goals, nine assists). In goal, sophomore Mark Dekanich (North Vancouver, B.C.) has played in 14 games and has posted a 9-1-3 record, a 1.96 goals against average and a .932 save percentage. Providence College (9-6-1) is currently tied for first place in the Hockey East standings with Boston College with an 8-2-1 league mark.

The Friars have won three consecutive games, including their most recent victory (4-1) over No. 18 Boston University on December 8. Senior Torry Gajda (Westfield, Mass.) scored two goals, while sophomore Tyler Sims (Fort Worth, Texas) stopped 25 shots as the Friars remained undefeated at home (5-0-1). Gajda leads the team in scoring with 19 points (11 goals, eight assists). He is currently on a four-game goal scoring streak. In goal, Sims has played in 15 of the 16 games and has posted a 9-5-1 record, a 2.24 goals against average and a .923 save percentage. The Friars lead the all-time series against Colgate, 15-9-4, but the Raiders are 4-0-1 against the Friars in the last five meetings. PC's last win over Colgate was on March 1, 1982 at Schneider Arena. During that game, current Friar Head Coach Tim Army, who played at PC (1981-85), recorded one assist in a 7-3 victory.
