PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The No. 10 Providence College women's ice hockey team was defeated by Connecticut, 3-2, on Sunday, February 13 at the Freitas Ice Arena in Storrs, Conn. Providence went 0-for-4 on the power play while Connecticut went 2-for-4. The Friars fall to 15-9-4 overall and 10-3-1 in HOCKEY EAST action.
Senior Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) posted her 17th goal of the season to put the Friars on the scoreboard first at 2:40. Junior Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.) recorded her 26th assist on the play to Zimmerman. The Huskies Jacquelyn McGuire scored at 5:53 that knotted the score, 1-1, with the assist by Natalie Vibert. Tiffany Owens put the Huskies up, 2-1, with a goal at 8:44. Vibert and Alicia Romolla were credited with the assists.
Both team held strong on defense and did not allow any goals in the second period.
The Friars opened the third period with a quick goal at 00:41 by Thatcher that was assisted sophomore Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.). At 10:20 Vibert scored the game-winning goal past Friars' netminder Lauren Florio (North Providence, R.I.).
Florio recorded 11 saves, while Kaitlin Shain posted a game-high 28.
Providence will continue HOCKEY EAST play with a home-and-home series against Boston College on Saturday and Sunday, February 19-20. Both games are slated for a 2:00 start.
