PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's hockey team led the 14th-ranked Maine Black Bears, 1-0, after one period, but the Black Bears scored six goals in the next two periods en route for a 6-2 victory over the Friars on Friday, February 19 at Schneider Arena.
The turning point in the game came early in the third period as the Friars cut Maine's lead to 3-2 While killing a penalty, Jon Rheault (Deering, N.H.) stole the puck at the blue line and skated on a breakaway before lifting a wrist shot over Jimmy Howard's glove side at 1:40. However, 21 seconds later, the Black Bears responded on the power play as John Soares scored his second goal of the night to make the score, 4-2. Maine added two more goals in the third period to complete the scoring.
The Friars led 1-0 just 22 seconds into the game as Colin McDonald (Wethersfield, Conn.) fired a wrist shot from the left face-off circle that eluded Howard, who was screened in front. Maine tied the game at 3:52 of the second period as Soares beat PC goalie Tyler Sims (Forth Worth, Texas). Greg Moore gave the Black Bears the lead for good when he converted the first of three Maine power-play tallies at 6:15. Brent Shepheard added another goal at 13:03 to increase the lead to 3-1.
Maine outshot Providence 42-31 as Howard earned the win by making 27 saves, while Tyler Sims stopped 27 shots for the Friars.
