ORTH ANDOVER, Mass. -- Bryan Horan and Bill McCreary each recorded one goal and one assist to lead the Providence College men's hockey team to a 4-1 victory over Merrimack on Friday, February 25 at Lawler Arena.
It marked PC's first road victory of the season as Providence improved to 9-19-4 and 4-14-4 in Hockey East play. Merrimack fell to 8-24-2 overall and 1-20-1 in league play. The Friars also moved into a tie for seventh-place in the league with UMass, who was idle tonight.
After a scoreless first period in which the Warriors outshot the Friars, 13-12, it was Providence that opened the scoring in the second period. The Friar first line of Jamie Carroll, Chris Chaput and Torry Gajda continued on its hot streak as Gajda scored his sixth goal of the season at 5:02 with assists going to Chaput and Carroll.
Providence increased its lead to 2-0 at 2:45 of the third period when Bryan Horan took a pass from Bill McCreary and lifted a wrist shot past Casey Guenther. Merrimack cut the lead at 5:15 as Hank Carisio scored on a two-on-one breakaway. Providence regained its two-goal advantage when Bill McCreary also converted on a two-on-way breakaway as he scored on a high wrist shot at 18:10. Colin McDonald sealed the win for the Friars with an empty-net goal at 19:02.
The Friars and the Warriors will play each other again on Saturday, February 26.
