Providence, R.I. (February 27, 2005). -- The Providence College women's hockey team topped No. 8 New Hampshire, 4-3, at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. The Friars improve to 9-3-3 at home and skate to a first place tie with New Hampshire in HOCKEY EAST standings.

Both teams ended the first period evenly matched with no goals and eight shots apiece on goal.

In the second period, the Friars began to warm up. Freshman Cherie Hendrickson (Boxford, Mass.) posted her second goal of the season to put Providence on the board. Senior Hilary Greaves (Cranston, R.I.) and freshman Kathleen Smith (Waterloo, Ontario) were credited with the assists. At 17:16, Greaves deflected a shot that led to a break-away goal opportunity. As Greaves approached the UNH net, Rebecca Peters was called for tripping which led to a Greaves' penalty shot and goal that put the Friars up, 3-0, leading into the third period.

At 2:06 of the third period, the Friars netted their fourth straight goal when freshman Rachel Crissy (Naperville, Ill.) slapped her seventh goal of the season two feet away from the net. Senior captains Emily Gryp (Lexington, Mass.) and Danielle Bourgette (Anaheim, Calif.) assisted on the play.

Near midway of the third period, the Friars' defense began to let up. At 11:56, the Wildcats pulled their goalie which allowed Jennifer Hitchcock to score her 10th goal of the season. A little over a minute later, the Wildcats struck again with a power play goal by Taylor Palazeti. Jackie Wedster earned her sixth assist on the play. Nicole Hekle inched New Hampshire one goal closer with her 18th goal of the season at 18:14. Team captain Stephanie Jones assisted on the play. Time expired before New Hampshire had another shot opportunity, ending the game, 4-3.

Providence outshot New Hampshire, 29-24, including 13 shots in the second period. The Friars went 1-for-5, while New Hampshire managed 2-for-7 on the power play.

Friar netminder Amy Thomas (Austin, Texas) recorded 21 saves, while Melissa Bourdan posted a game-high 25.

Providence's will conclude the regular season with a home-and-home series against Northeastern on Saturday and Sunday, March 5-6.
