PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's hockey team and No. 1 Boston College battled to a 2-2 tie on Friday, February 4 in a Hockey East game at Schneider Arena. It marked the third draw between the two teams this season.
Providence jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second period when freshman Jon Rheault (Deering, N.H.) rifled a wrist shot over Cory Schneider's left shoulder at 1:21. However, defenseman Andrew Alberts scored the first of his two goals at 2:59 to cut the lead to 2-1. Alberts knotted the game at 2-2 as he scored on a high wrist shot from the right face-off circle at 14:24, while the Eagles were on the power play.
Both teams had chances to score the rest of the way, but each respective goaltender was strong. David Cacciola (Burlington, Mass.), who recorded 60 saves in an earlier meeting this season against BC, made 35 saves, while Schneider stopped 27 shots to maintain his unbeaten record (8-0-4). The Friars had several chances to score with less than five minutes remaining in the third period as they were on the power play, but Schneider thwarted Providence's chances and Boston College increased its unbeaten streak to 14 games.
Providence opened the scoring as sophomore Jamie Carroll (Andover, Conn.) tallied his team-leading ninth goal of the season at 16:43. The Friars, who were already on the power play, took advantage to a delayed penalty and pulled Cacciola for an extra skater. Carroll was able to control the puck at the left face-off circle and fire a wrist shot just under the cross bar.
For Providence, it marked the second time that they have tied the same team three times in one season. The Friars also tied Northeastern three times in 2003-04. For the first-place Eagles, Providence is one of two Hockey East teams that they have not beaten this season.
