The No. 10 Providence College women's ice hockey team topped Maine, 4-1, on Sunday, February 6 at the Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. The Friars improve to 15-7-4 overall and 10-1-1 in HOCKEY EAST action.
Sophomore Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) opened up the Friar offense with her 17th goal of the seaon at 8:18 of the first period. Junior Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.) assisted on the play. Freshman Rachel Crissy (Naperville, Ill.) posted her second career game-winning goal at 14:38 of the first period with a pass from senior Emily Gryp (Lexington, Mass.).
In the second period, the Friars continued to pour on the offense with a power play goal credited to senior Hilary Greaves (Cranston, R.I.). Crissy and senior captain Danielle Bourgette (Anaheim, Calif.) assisted on the play.
The Black Bears responded at 5:13 of the third period with a goal by senior Andrea Steranko assisted by Cheryl White and Tristan Desmet.
Greaves recorded her second goal of the night and sixth on the season at 19:46 of the third period assisted by defensemen Kristin Gigliotti (Saquoit, N.Y.) and freshman Kathleen Smith (Waterloo, Ontario).
Rachel Gettings recorded 23 saves while the Friars' Amy Thomas posted a game-high 30 in the victory.
Providence will battle in a home-and-home series with Connecticut on Saturday and Sunday, February 12-13. Both games are slated for a 2:00 p.m. face-off.
