PROVIDENCE, R.I. (February 12, 2005) -- For the first time ever, No. 10 Providence College women's ice hockey team fell to Connecticut, 5-3, at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. The Friars fall to 19-1-2 all-time versus the Huskies, with a 1-1-1 record against UConn this season.
The first period was filled with back-and-forth scoring by both teams. Sophomore Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) scored first for the Friars at 2:16, junior Karen Thatcher and senior Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) assisted on the play. Connecticut responded with a goal by Angie Wallace at 9:06, assisted by Alicia Romolla. Captain Shannon Connolly added her sixth goal of the season at 11:26, assisted by Jaclyn Hawkins. Providence knotted the score, 2-2, with a power play goal by Zimmerman at 14:31. Thatcher was credited with her 25th assist while Watrous tallied her 10th assist of the season on the play.
At 7:32 of the second period, Hawkins scored the only goal of the period which was assisted by Connolly.
Watrous recorded her second goal of the night on the power play that tied the score, 3-3, at 6:27. Defensemen Kathleen Smith (Waterloo, Ontario) and Kristin Gigliotti (Saquoit, N.Y.) assisted on the play.
The Huskies' Megan McLeod sealed the deal for Connecticut with the game-winning goal at 11:27 on the power play. Romolla recieved her second assist of the night on the play.
At 19:43, Wallace scored her second goal of the night into the empty net on the power play. Tiffany Owens recieved her 12th assist of the season on the play.
The Friars outshot Connecticut, 28-17. Providence went 2-for-6, while UConn went 3-for-5 on the power play.
Amy Thomas (Austin, Texas) recorded 12 saves, while Kaitlyn Shain posted 25.
The Friars head to Storrs, Conn. to finish the back end of the home-and-home series against Connecticut at UConn Ice Arena on Sunday, February 13. Face-off is scheduled at 2:00 p.m.
