PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's soccer team defeated Syracuse, 3-2, in men's BIG EAST soccer action on Friday, September 23 at PC's Glay Field in Providence. Friar sophomore Ryan Maduro (Bristol, R.I.) scored his second goal of the game with 38 seconds remaining in regulation to give the Friars the win as they improved to 3-0-4. With the win, Providence remains as the only undefeated team in the BIG EAST.
The Friars netted the first goal of the game in the eighth minute when Maduro took a throw in from senior Derek Nobrega (Cumberland, R.I.) and blasted a shot from 24 yards that beat the Syracuse goalkeeper Robert Cavicchia high into the top left corner of the net.
Providence opened the scoring in the second half on a goal by senior Eoin Lynch (Yarmouth, Maine) in the 61st minute. Lynch headed in the ball after a high rebound deflected into the front of the goal. For Lynch, it marked his 23rd career goal. He is now just one goal shy of moving into the third spot in the Friar all-time goals list.
After Lynch's goal Syracuse increased the pressure and began to generate more offense. Pete Rowley finished off a partial break in when he one timed a kick from the right side in the 70th minute. Aaron Posner set up the goal with a feed across the goal mouth from the left side. The Orange offense continued to gain momentum. With the time running out Rowley scored his second goal of the game and equalizer with 1:11 remaining in the game.
However, Providence took the kickoff and moved down into the Syracuse end where Maduro was fouled just outside the box. Nobrega took the free kick that forced Cavicchia to sprawl to his right to make the save. Maduro broke in and kicked in the rebound to give the Friars their first BIG EAST win of the season.
Friar goalkeeper junior Chris Konopka (Toms River, N.J.) finished the game with three saves.
"I think we played well, but to give up the two-goal lead in the final 20 minutes was tough," Friar Head Coach Chaka Daley said. "It was not great defending on our part. I give Syracuse credit, they went to three men up front and it caused us problems. Overall, I'm proud of our guys. They battled back and we are happy to have earned the victory and have a BIG EAST win under our belt."
The Friars will return to action on Sunday, September 25 versus St. John's at PC's Glay Field at 2:00 p.m.
