BOSTON, Mass. - The Providence College women's hockey team traveled to Boston, Mass. on Saturday, October 21 for a rematch with the Huskies of Northeastern after Providence took game one on Wednesday, October 18 at Schneider. The Friars dominated the first two periods outscoring the Huskies 5-0. Providence went on to win the game 5-1. With the win, Providence improves to 3-1-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the HOCKEY EAST. Northeastern falls to 0-5-0 and 0-2-0 in conference play.
The Friars capitalized in the first period scoring three goals on three powerplay opportunities. Sophomore Katy Beach (Cleveland, Ohio) got PC on the board six and a half minutes into the game with her second goal of the season. Sophomore Mari Pehkonen (Tampere, Finland) took advantage of the second powerplay when she found the back of the net off of a deflection. Sophomore Erin Normore (Cambridge, Ont.) scored an even strength goal on a feed from freshman Pamela McDevitt (South Boston, Mass.) and junior Sarah Feldman (Fall River, Mass.). Feldman gave the Friars a 4-0 lead with under six minutes to go in the period capitalizing again on a powerplay. After Providence scored three goals midway though the first, Northeastern pulled former Friar goaltender Stacey Scott (Massena, N.Y.). The Friars out shot the Huskies 16-5 in the first.
Providence continued to produce on powerplays in the second, to go ahead 5-0. Pehkonen tallied her second goal of the game off of a Feldman outlet pass. The Friars continued to dominate in the offensive end outshooting the Huskies 10-4 in the second period and 26-9 through two.
The Huskies turned up the intensity in the third and tallied their first goal of the contest three minutes into the third period. Freshman Chelsey Jones (Lake Elmo, Minn.) scored on a brilliant pass from senior Amy Goodney (Marquette, Mich.) and freshman Lindsay Berman (Odenton, Md.). Northeastern controlled the puck throughout the third out shooting Providence 19-7. However, senior Jana Bugden (Cornerbrook, Newfoundland) shut down Northeastern making 27 saves and allowed only one goal.
Providence will host the Huskies of UConn on Sunday, October 22 at 2:00 p.m.
