PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The No. 13 Providence College men's hockey team defeated the University of Massachusetts, 4-1, on Saturday, February 11 at Schneider Arena. With the victory, the Friars (15-11-2, 12-7-2 Hockey East) completed a regular season sweep of the Minutemen (11-17-0, 8-13-0 Hockey East).
Freshman Nick Mazzolini opened the scoring for the Friars at 9:35 of the first period. Senior Nate Meyers (Maple Glen, Pa.) slid a pass right in front to Mazzolini, who tapped the puck past UMass goalie Gabe Winer (Stoughton, Mass.). The Friars increased their lead to 2-0 at 15:37 as senior Torry Gajda (Westfield, Mass.) recorded his team-leading 14th goal of the season. Junior Dinos Stamoulis (Carle Place, N.Y.) collected a loose puck in front of his own bench and played the puck ahead to Gajda, who had just finished serving a penalty. Gajda beat his defender to the inside and skated in on a breakaway, before tucking a backhander past Winer.
In the second period, the Minutemen cut the lead in half as freshman Cory Quirk (Brockton, Mass.) registered his seventh goal of the season. Quirk stole puck at the right faceoff circle and rifled a quick shot that beat PC goalie Tyler Sims (Fort Worth, Texas) to the glove side to make the score, 2-1.
The Friars added two early goals in the third period to seal the win. Senior captain Tony Zancanaro (Trenton, Mich.) scored on the power play at 2:18 as he re-directed Jon Rheault's shot past Winer. Freshman Kyle Laughlin (Gambrills, Md.) also scored on a re-direct at 4:58. Stamoulis and senior James Pemberton (Cumberland, R.I.) finished with two assists each.
Winer finished with 34 saves, while Sims stopped 26 shots for the Friars, who ended a three-game winless streak.
