BURLINGTON, Vt. -- The Providence College women's ice hockey team downed Vermont, 5-1, on Sunday, February 5, at Gutterson Fieldhouse in Burlington, Vt. The Friars swept the season-series, 3-0 over the Catamounts. Senior Katelynn Laffin (Norwell, Mass.) led the Friars with a single-game career high four points on two goals and two assists. Junior Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) followed with a three-point effort on two goals and one assist. Watrous' three-point effort leaves her one-point shy of the 100-point century club, as she currently has 99 points on 48 goals and 51 assists.

Watrous enjoyed her 12th multi-point game of the season and opened up her scoring assault at 2:59 on a first period power play. Seniors Katelynn Laffin (Norwell, Mass.) and Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.) assisted on the play. The Friars were placed in a five-on-four disadvatange when sophomore Caitlin Malboeuf (Fairfield, Vt.) was charged with an interference penalty at 3:13. Less than a minute later sophomore Rachel Crissy (Naperville, Ill.) netted her first career short-hander from an assist from junior Kristin Gigliotti (Sauquoit, N.Y.). Watrous capped off the first period with 14th goal of the season at 8:31. Seniors Ashley Payton (Chesterfield, Mo.) and Laffin earned assists the on the play.

The Friars continued to pour on the offense when Laffin nets a power play goal at 11:53 of the second period. Freshman Brittany Simpson (Ontario, Canada) and Thatcher were credited with the assists, which gave Providence a 4-0 advantange. At 18:00, Kate Lesniak prevented a Friar shutout with a power play goal with an assist from Caitlin Barnes. Less than a minute later, the Friars responded when Laffin tallied her second goal of the night at 18:39 with the assists from Watrous and Thatcher.

Both teams weren't able to capitalize on a total of five power plays in the third period, cementing the score 5-1.

The Friars outshot Vermont, 48-17. Providence was one shot shy its season high 49 against Niagara on January 7. The Friars went two-for-seven on the power play, and killed four-of-five penalties. Junior goalie Lauren Florio (North Providence, R.I.) earned her first decision of the season with 16 saves in the net for the Friars. Shivaun Siegl made five saves and gave up three goals in 8:31 minutes. Jenilee Roy stepped in a posted a game-high 38 saves in 51:29.

The Friars improve to 15-9-4 overall and 9-4-2 in HOCKEY EAST action. The Friars will host Boston University on Saturday, February 11 at 1:00 p.m.
