NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. -- Sophomore Jon Rheault (Deering, N.H.) scored two goals and added one assist to lead the Providence College men's hockey team to a 5-3 win at Merrimack on Friday, March 3 in North Andover, Mass.
With the win, the Friars improved to 17-13-3 overall and 14-9-3 in Hockey East action. In addition, the Friars remained in fifth-place of the Hockey East standings, just one point behind fourth-place New Hampshire with one game to play. The Friars will close out the regular season on Saturday, March 4 vs. the Warriors at Schneider Arena at 6:30 p.m. Merrimack fell to 5-23-5 overall and 2-19-5 in the league.
The Friars took a 2-0 first period lead on goals by Rheault and freshman Kyle Laughlin (Gambrills, Md.). Rheault scored at 5:57 after a scrum in front of the net. Freshman Brad Cooper (Dallas, Texas) and junior Bryan Horan (Farmington, Conn.) each picked up an assist on the play. Laughlin's goal, his seventh of the season, came at 8:27 as his shot from the left face-off circle bounced off a Merrimack player and past Warrior goalie Frank McLaughlin.
The Warriors climbed back into the game at 3:21 of the second period as senior captain Bryan Schmidt scored on a two-on-one short-handed rush. For Schmidt, it marked his 33rd career goal, which is the most for a defenseman in Merrimack history.
In the third period, junior Colin McDonald (Wethersfield, Conn.) scored a power-play goal at 9:04 to give the Friars a 3-1 lead. However, the Warriors responded with a power-play tally at 10:41 to cut the lead to 3-2. Rheault capped off a strong night as he scored his team leading 15th goal of the season to increased the Friar lead to 4-2. Rheault collected a loose puck a center ice, skated by a defender before firing a wrist shot from the top of the right face off circle that beat McLaughlin at 16:05. Junior Jamie Carroll (Andover, Conn.) made the score 5-2 at 18:27 when he took a pass from McDonald and fired home his ninth tally of the season. Scott Drewicki recorded his first goal of the season at 18:48 to complete the scoring for the Warriors. McDonald finished with one goal and one assist, while Wild added two assists.
In goal, PC sophomore Tyler Sims (Fort Worth, Texas) made 15 saves, while McLaughlin stopped 36 shots.
