PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College women's soccer Head Coach Jim McGirr has announced the 2006 women's soccer schedule. The Friars will play a total of 18 regular season matches including eight home games at PC's Glay Field and match-ups against all four BIG EAST teams that qualified for the 2005 NCAA Tournament (Notre Dame, Connecticut, Marquette and West Virginia).
Providence will open the season at Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. on August 25th. In their home-opener the following Wednesday (8/30), the Friars will host in-state rival Rhode Island. Over the next three weeks, PC will face five other non-conference opponents: Fairfield (9/1 - Providence, R.I.), New Hampshire (9/3 - Providence, R.I.), Lafayette (9/8 - Stonybrook, N.Y.), Stonybrook (9/10 - Stonybrook, N.Y.) and Quinnipiac (9/17 - Hampden, Conn.).
Providence will travel to Storrs, Conn. for its BIG EAST-opener against the Huskies on September 15. In other conference road games, PC will travel to USF (9/22 - Tampa, Fla.), Georgetown (9/29 - Washington, D.C.), Villanova (10/1 - Villanova, Pa.), Pittsburgh (10/20 - Pittsburgh, Pa.) and West Virginia (10/22 - Morgantown, V.Wa.).
Here in Providence, the Friars will face Marquette (9/24 at 1:00 p.m.), Syracuse (10/6 at 3:00 p.m.), St. John's (10/8 at 1:00 p.m.) and DePaul (10/13 at 3:00 p.m.) before hosting Notre Dame on Senior Day, Sunday, October 15.
PC will return 16 letterwinners and nine starters for the 2006 campaign. In addition, the Friars will welcome some new faces to the line-up as McGirr, in his second year with the program, has recruited a talented freshman class consisting of nine student-athletes.
The Friars finished the 2005 season with a 5-11-2 record. Five of the team's losses were by just one goal.
