Box Score

Burlington, Vt. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team began the second half of their 2006-2007 HOCKEY EAST schedule with a 7-0 victory over the Catamounts of the University of Vermont. With the victory, the Friars improved to 9-8-3 overall and 6-1-2 in HOCKEY EAST play, while Vermont fell to 3-15-2 overall, and 1-7-1 in HOCKEY EAST play. The win marked the Firars' fourth straight conference win.

In the first period, the Friars scored two goals within twenty seconds to distance themselves from the Catamounts, as Senior Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) opened the scoring when she converted a Mari Pehkonen (Tampere, Finland) pass for the game's first goal, beating Vermont Goaltender Jenilee Roy (Sandown, N.H.) at 5:59. Junior Sarah Feldman (Fall River, Mass.) scored the next Friar goal while on the power play, at 6:19. Watrous was credited with the lone assist. Feldman then closed out the first period scoring with another power play tally, this time with assists from Senior Kristin Gigliotti (Sauquoit, N.Y.) and Watrous at 11:42.

The second period saw the Friar onslaught continue, as new Vermont goaltender Ashley Walenty (Lake Placid, N.Y.) faced 18 shots in the period. Watrous again found the back of the net for the Friars with her second goal of the game at the 15:39 mark. The goal was assisted by sophomore Maura Grainger (Ithaca, N.Y.) and freshman Brittany Nelson (Shelburne, Vt.). It marked Grainger's first point of the season, and Nelson's first collegiate assist. Sophomore Mari Pehkonen was the next friar to light the lamp as she scored at the 18:33 mark of the second period with assists from Watrous and classmate Katy Beach (Cleveland, Ohio). The Friars continued their scoring ways in the third period as Gigliotti registered a goal at the 9:07 mark, with the assist coming from Pehkonen. Feldman then closed out the scoring for the Friars, with a power play goal at 12:04. Watrous and sophmore Erin Normore (Cambridge, Ontario) were credited with the assists.

In goal, sophmore Danielle Ciarletta (Blaine, Minn.) and Senior Lauren Florio (North Providence, R.I.) combined for the shutout as Ciarletta stopped ten shots and Florio added a save of her own.

The Friars will return to action next weekend to finish out the non-conference portion of their schedule with a pair of games versus the fourth ranked Badgers of The University of Wisconsin. Providence will face Wisconsin on Friday, January 12 and Saturday, January, 13 in Madison, Wisconsin at the Kohl Center. Both games will start at 2:07 p.m.
