Volleyball Wins Two Matches On Saturday, October 27

Newark, N.J. - The Providence College volleyball defeated Sacred Heart, 3-1 and Howard, 3-1 on Saturday, October 27 at the NJIT Halloween Classic. The Friars defeated Sacred Heart with scores of 28-30, 30-21, 30-27, and 30-18. Providence defeated Howard by the scores of 30-23, 28-30, 30-21, and 30-24. With the two wins, Providence improves its record to 17-9.

Senior Sarah Fleming (Saint Paul, Minn.) led the Friars to a 3-1 victory over Sacred Heart with a match-high 19 kills to go along with eight digs, four assists and four blocks. Junior Kelly Krahenbuhl (Larkspur, Colo.) recorded a match-high 23 digs at defense for the Friars. Junior Jeanette Toney (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had another solid match with 13 kills and five blocks. Junior Elizabeth Flynn (Bellerose, N.Y.) also contributed five blocks to go along with her 12 kills. Sophomore Abby Majewski (Sunderland, Mass.) rounded out four Friars in double-figures with 12 kills. Junior setter Sara Sheehan (West Chester, Pa.) recorded 53 assists and 12 digs to give her fourth double-double of the season.

Fleming followed her splendid performance against Sacred Heart with an even greater performance against Howard. After recording a career-high 19 kills in the first match of the day, Fleming outdid herself by tallying a new career-high 24 kills in the night cap. She also had 16 digs and four blocks. Fleming was named to the NJIT Halloween Classic All-Tournament Team.

Sheehan recorded yet another double-double with a match-high 59 assists and 11 digs. Krahenbuhl registered 24 digs. Toney recorded 15 more kills and another five blocks in the win over Howard. Flynn rounded out three Friars in double-figure kills with 11.

Providence will travel to Hartford, Conn. on Wednesday, October 31 for a Halloween tilt with the Hawks of Hartford University. The game is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m.
