Strorrs, Conn. - Providence came back from one goal deficits on three occasions, as they went on the beat the Huskies of Connecticut by a score of 6-3. With the win, and the weekend sweep of the Huskies, Providence earns the third seed in the Women's Hockey East Tournament.

UConn struck early for the game's first goal at the 2:04 mark of what proved to be an eventful first period. Jaclyn Hawkins took a shot for the Huskies in the low slot, and Friar goaltender Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) made a right pad save but Nicole Tritter got to the rebound first and slid it in to give UConn a 1-0 lead. The Friars came close to tying the game minutes later when senior Kristin Gigliotti (Saquoit, N.Y.) beat Husky goaltender Brittany Wilson, but the shot from the top of the face-off circles hit the post. Gigliotti eventually knotted the game at one when she converted a pass from classmate Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) at 13:07, making the score 1-1. Bugden kept the score at 1-1 when she made a glove save on Natalie Vibert's break-away bid at 15:24. UConn did briefly take a 2-1 lead when Dominique Thibault beat a screened Bugden at 17:10. But Colleen Martin (Woburn, Mass.) and the Friars answered quickly with a goal 41 seconds later at 17:51. Martin's goal came off of Watrous' second assist of the period.

The second period featured more defensive play from both sides, but at 16:04 UConn was able to take a 3-2 lead behind a power-play goal, scored by Thibault. PC answered with a power-play goal of its own at 19:52. Gigliotti took a shot from the point that was tipped in front by junior Sarah Feldman (Fall River, Mass.) over to sophomore Mari Pehkonen (Tampere, Finland) who finished for her team-leading eleventh power-play goal of the season at 19:53. In the third period, the Friars took the lead when Kathleen Smith (Waterloo, Ont.) slid a pass to Gigliotti at the offensive blue line, who unleashed a slap-shot that beat Wilson at 4:17. The Friars quickly added to their lead at ** when Jenna Keilch (Clinton Township, Mich.) beat two defenders down low and subsequently beat Wilson for her second goal of the weekend. The goal was assisted by Erin Normore (Cambridge, Ont.). Normore went on to add an empty net goal for the Friars at 18:42, with an assist from Gigliotti.

With the win, Providence finishes the regular season with a record of 15-15-4, and 12-6-3 in HOCKEY EAST play, while UConn stands at 17-14-3 and 12-7-2 in HOCKEY EAST play. Bugden finished with 30 saves for the Friars, while Wilson had 26 stops for UConn. The Friars return to action next weekend as the Women's HOCKEY EAST Tournament gets underway in Durham, N.H. Providence, as the three seed, will face Boston College in the first round on Saturday, March 3.
