BURLINGTON, Vt. - Sophomore Nick Mazzolini's (Anchorage, Alaska) goal late in the first period proved to be the game winner as the Providence College men's hockey team defeated No. 14 Vermont, 4-1, Saturday night at the Gutterson Fieldhouse in Burlington, Vt. It marked PC's first win over Vermont since December 27, 1997.
The Friars had seven shots in the first period and scored twice to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission. Sophomore Cody Wild (North Providence, R.I.) struck first for PC with his third goal of the season. Chase Watson (Media, Pa.) played the puck to the slot to freshman Chris Eppich (Surrey, B.C.), who fired a one timer that was saved by UVM goalie Joe Fallon. However, the puck popped up in the air and Wild was able to smack the puck from mid air past Fallon. The Catamounts bounced back less than three minutes later, capitalizing on their first power play of the night to even the score. Brian Roloff's shot from the point was re-directed by Kenny Macaulay and into the net. The Friars regained the lead with 12 seconds left in the period when Mazzolini rifled a high slap shot from the left face-off circle that beat Fallon to the short side.
The Friars controlled much of the second period and at the 10:33 mark they increased the lead to 3-1. Senior Tony Zancanaro (Trenton, Mich.) won a face-off to the left point to classmate Dinos Stamoulis (Carle Place, N.Y.) who unleashed a slap shot that took a deflection in front and into the net. Zancanaro added an empty-net goal late in the third period to seal the win.
PC goalie Tyler Sims (Grand Blanc, Mich.) earned the win by making 19 saves. Fallon also stopped 20 shots for the Catamounts.
