Volleyball Defeats Holy Cross In Five Game Thriller, 3-2

Worcester, Mass. - The Providence College volleyball team completed its eight game road trip with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Holy Cross on Wednesday, September 12. This marks the second time PC has defeated the Crusaders. The Friars won the match with scores of 30-27, 30-28, 28-30, 28-30, 15-5. With the win the Friars improve to 5-4 overall while Holy Cross drops to 3-8. Providence was led by the unstoppable junior Jeanette Toney (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who registered a career and game-high 27 kills.

The Friars jumped out to a two game lead after two close contests with the Crusaders. After a Providence let down in games three and four, Holy Cross capitalized with a match-tying victory in game four. However, the Friars turned up the intensity and rolled in game five for the 3-2 win.

Junior Elizabeth Flynn (Bellerose, N.Y.) hit double-figure kills once again with 15. Senior Sarah Fleming (Saint Paul, Minn.) tallied a double-double with 14 kills and 13 digs. Junior setter Sara Sheehan (West Chester, Pa.) nearly registered a triple-double with 46 assists, 13 digs and eight kills. Junior Kelly Krahenbuhl (Larkspur, Colo.) contributed on the defensive side of the ball with a game-high 21 digs.

"Although the first two games were close, we played really well as a team. We let down in games three and four and allowed Holy Cross back in the match. We finished the match with great intensity in game five and that is how we should play all the time," said Head Coach Margot Royer.

Providence returns home on Friday and Saturday September 14-15 to host the Fourth Annual Friar Classic. Providence will play St. Francis at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and Coppin State at 12:30 p.m. and Sacred Heart at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
