LOWELL, Mass. - The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated, 4-1, at UMass Lowell Friday night at in a Hockey East game at Tsongas Arena.

The River Hawks struck first at 6:06 of the opening as they took a advantage of their first power-play chance of the night. Nick Schaus was able to pounce on a loose puck right in front and fired it into the net just as the net came off its morings. The Friars had several chances late in the period to tie the game as they had a power-play opportunity, but Carter Hutton made several saves, including one pad save on junior John Cavanagh's (Warwick, R.I.) attempt with 42 seconds left.

UMass Lowell increased its lead at 7:19 of the second period as Mike Potacco had a partial breakaway and slid the puck to his left to a streaking Mark Roebothan, who tapped it into the empty net. Soon thereafter, the Friars went on the power play and had two point-blank chances as freshman Matt Bergland (Faribault, Minn.) and senior Pierce Norton (South Boston, Mass.) were in alone against Hutton, but he was able to make both saves. However, the River Hawks responded at 10:38 and added to their lead as Jonathan Maniff capitalized on a two-on-one rush and potted his first goal of the season.

The Friars pulled to within, 3-1, at 14:20 of the third period as sophomore Eric Baier (North Kingstown, R.I.) rushed into the UML zone before firing a wrist shot that was saved by Hutton. However, senior Kyle Laughlin (Gambrills, Md.) got the rebound and potted his first goal of the season. The River Hawks added a late empty-net goal to seal the win. Hutton finished with 26 saves, while PC goalie Chris Mannix (Hubbardston, Mass.) had 21 stops.

The Friars are back in action on Saturday, October 25 at Holy Cross.
