MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- - The Providence College men's soccer team scored twice in the first half en route to a 2-0 victory over Marquette Saturday afternoon in a crucial BIG EAST Conference match in Milwaukee, Wis. With the win, the Friars improved to 7-5-3 overall and 4-5-1 in the league, while Marquette fell to 3-8-4 and 1-6-2 in conference play. The Friars also moved into fourth place of the BIG EAST Blue Division.
Providence jumped ahead in the 20th minute, benefitting from an own goal. The Friars then gained a two-goal edge in the 24th minute when sophomore Matt Marcin (Wilmington, Del.) scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season. Senior Ryan Maduro (Bristol, R.I.) setup Marcin right in front and Marcin's one-touch shot found the back of the net, For Maduro, it marked his team-leading fifth assist of the season.
Junior goalkeeper Timothy Murray (Haverhill, Mass.) recorded his career-high ninth shutout of the season.
The Friars are back in action on Tuesday, October 28 with a match at Harvard, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
