DURHAM, N.H. - The 14th-ranked Providence College men's hockey team was defeated, 4-3, by No. 4 New Hampshire Saturday night at the Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H. The Wildcats scored with three minutes left in the third period to earn the win as they improved to 19-7-2 overall and 15-4-2 in Hockey East play. PC fell to 13-11-4 and 10-7-4 in league play.
The Wildcats struck first at 3:59 when Joe Charlebois fired a shot that beat PC goalie Tyler Sims (Fort Wayne, Ind.) who was screened in front. At 13:45, UNH increased its lead to 2-0 on the power play as Danny Dries slipped a pass through the crease to Matt Fornataro who tapped the puck into the empty net.
The Friars, who got off to a slow start in the first period, quickly cut the lead in half as junior Cody Wild (North Providence, R.I.) skated down the right wing and slipped a pass to the slot to classmate Pierce Norton (South Boston, Mass.) who rifled a one-timer by past UNH goalie Kevin Regan at 1:28. Norton struck again to even the score (2-2) at 15:48 when freshman Joe Lavin's shot was blocked, but Norton pounced on the rebound and tallied his 13th goal of the season. It also marked Norton's sixth career two-goal game and the second against UNH. Freshman Joe Lavin (Shrewsbury, Mass.) also assisted on the goal. UNH regained the lead (3-2) just over two minutes later as Mike Sislo potted his second goal of the season.
The Friars tied the game again at 11:28 of the third period on freshman Jordan Kremyr's first career goal. Classmate Kyle MacKinnon (Walnut, Calif.) controlled the puck down the right wing and drove towards the net before firing a back-handed shot, which Regan stopped. However, Kremyr was there for the rebound. The turning point in the game came in the third period when the Friars were whistled for a five-minute major and on the ensuing power-play the Wildcats took the lead for good as Mike Rajda scored on a wrist shot from the right circle. Regan finished with 37 saves for the Wildcats, while Sims stopped 33 shots. Sims also played in his 109th career game, tying a PC record.
PC is back in action on Friday, February 22 when to North Andover, Mass. to take on Merrimack.
