Track Competes In Penn Relays And Brown Invitational

PROVIDENCE, RI - This past weekend the Providence College Men's and Women's Track & Field teams competed in the Penn Relays and the Brown Invitational. The Penn Relays started on Thursday, April 24th and went until Saturday, April 26th, while the Brown Invitational was on Sunday, April 27th.
For the men, on Thursday night in Philadelphia, Pa., senior Ahmed Haji (West Hartford, Conn.) finished sixth overall in the 5000m with a time of 13:57.01. Haji's time qualified him for the NCAA Regional Championships in Tallahassee, Fla. on May 30th and 31st.
On Friday, the Men's Distance Medley Relay team finished ninth overall with a time of 9:39.48. The team comprised of sophomore Hayden McLaren (Christchurch, New Zealand), junior Charles Dewey (Worcester, Mass.), senior James Lourenco (West Warwick, R.I.) and senior Max Smith (Dunedin, New Zealand).
On Saturday, the 4x800m finished 12th overall in the Championships of America with a time of 7:35.87. The team was comprised of Lourenco, Dewey, senior Chris McDermott (West Haven, Conn.), and Smith.
On Sunday at Brown, freshman Stephen Justus finished second in the javelin with a BIG EAST qualifying mark of 55.96m. Freshman Brian Stannard (East Longmeadow, Mass.) won the 400m in a time of 49.98 and McDermott won the 1500m in a time of 3:53.30. The 4x400m team comprised of Stannard, junior Pandiani (Shrewsbury, Mass.), Lourenco, and Dewey finished first with a time of 3:20.63.
For the women, on Thursday night in Philadelphia, Pa., sophomore Breffini Twohig (Dublin, Ireland) finished sixth overall in the 3000m with a time of 9:48.00 and junior Sarah Morgan (Waikato, New Zealand) finished 16th in the Olympic Development section of the 5000m with a time of 17:12.27.
On Saturday, the women's 4x800m relay team finished first in the third section with a time of 9:10.24. The team was comprised of junior Katie Elliot (Penfield, N.Y.), junior Katherine Schock (Norwood, Mass.), freshman Emma Perron (West Hartford, Conn.), and sophomore Samantha Stadt (Pearl River, N.Y.).
On Sunday at Brown, Schock finished fourth in the 800m with a time of 2:14.47 and Elliot finished seventh in a time of 2:16.33. Perron finished fifth overall int he 3000m in a time of 10:10.09.
The Friars will compete next in the BIG EAST Championships at Villanova University on May 3rd and 4th.
