Providence, R.I.- The Providence College women's soccer team (8-8-3, 3-6-2 BIG EAST) was defeated by West Virginia (8-5-6, 5-3-3 BIG EAST), 1-0, on Sunday, October 25. It marks Providence's final game of the 2009 season.
West Virginia scored in the 20th minute when Megan Mischler scored her fifth goal of the season. She gained possession of the ball and shot it over the head of the goalkeeper to put the Mountaineers up 1-0. The goal would be the eventual game winner.
Providence created numerous quality scoring opportunities, notching 11 shots with six being on net. In the 49th minute, Jenna Roncarati (Cumberland, R.I.) took a hard shot from the top of the 18-yard box, but West Virginia goalkeeper Kerri Butler came up with a diving save. In the 56th minute, Providence had one of its best scoring opportunities when Tara Ricciardi (Wayne, N.J.) took a shot that was saved and the rebound came out to Mary Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.) who took another hard shot, but again Butler came up with the big save.
The Friar defense led by senior Katelin Blaine (Warwick, N.Y.) and Roncarati, played solid all game long only giving up six shots on net and two corner kicks.
