Men's Hockey To Play Weekend Series Versus Northeastern

PC TO PLAY WEEKEND SERIES AGAINST NORTHEASTERN... After defeating Brown, 4-3, to claim the Mayor's Cup on Tuesday, November 17, the Providence College hockey team will play a two-game weekend series against Northeastern, beginning on Friday, November 20 at Matthews Arena in Boston, Mass. The two teams will complete the series the following night at Schneider Arena.

SERIES HISTORY VERSUS NORTHEASTERN... In 134 all-time meetings between the two teams, the Friars lead, 75-47-12, including a 37-26-6 mark at Northeastern and a 37-19-6 record in Providence. Last season, the Huskies swept the season series, winning twice at Schneider Arena (4-0 on 10/17 and 3-1 on 1/23) and once at Matthews Arena (6-3 on 1/24). The Friars' last win over the Huskies was on January 26, 2008, a 5-2 decision at Schneider Arena.

SCOUTING NORTHEASTERN... The Huskies are coming off a 5-2 home win against Maine on November 14 as they split a two-game series against the Black Bears. Northeastern, which had five different goal scorers, tallied four goals in the third period, including Alex Tuckerman's game winner at the 8:34 mark. Chris Rawlings finished with 34 saves. The night before, Northeastern was defeated by Maine, 6-2. Garrett Vermeersch leads the team in scoring with six points on two goals and four assists, while Wade MacLeod (three goals, two assists) and Steve Silva (two goals, three assists) are tied for second with five points each. Chris Rawlings has played all nine games and has a 3.18 goals against average and a .909 save percentage.

FRIAR QUICK NOTES... • The Friars rank tied for 12th in the country in team defense, allowing 2.22 goals per game ... Six of the Friars' nine games so far this season have been on the road. • The Friars are 4-2 in games away from Schneider Arena this season ... Sophomore Matt Bergland (Faribault, Minn.) has recorded at least one point in six of the nine games this season ... Bergland already has six goals in nine games this season, which is four shy of what he had in his freshman season when he played in all 34 games.

LAST TIME OUT... The Friars are coming off a 4-3 win over Brown in the 24th Annual Mayor's Cup on Tuesday, November 17 at Schneider Arena. Matt Bergland and junior Matt Germain (Rockland, Mass.) each scored to give PC a 2-0 first period lead. After the Bears cut the lead to 2-1, junior Ian O'Connor (Londonderry, N.H.) scored in the second period, while Germain added his second of the night early in the third period as the Friars moved ahead, 4-1. However, the Bears scored twice in the third period, including a goal with 1:11 left to cut the lead to 4-3. However, the Friars held on to claim their third consecutive Mayor's Cup victory and improved 14-8-2 in the Mayor's Cup.

FRIARS AGAINST NON-CONFERENCE FOES... Providence College has posted a 5-1 record in non-conference games this season, including a 3-1 mark against teams from the CCHA. The Friars have outscored opponents, 20-11, in the six non-conference contests so far this season. PC also has defeated ECAC Hockey foe, Brown and Atlantic Hockey opponent, Holy Cross. The Friars close out their non-conference schedule against Dartmouth from the ECAC. Last season, the Friars posted a 3-4-0 record in non-league action.

BEAUDRY AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS... Alex Beaudry comes into this weekend among the top-24 in the nation in two statistical categories. He ranks 24th with a 2.26 goals against average and 17th with a .927 save percentage. Beaudry has helped the Friar defense allow just 20 goals in nine games.

FRIARS IN CLOSE GAMES... Four of PC's six wins this season have been one-goal contests. PC edged Holy Cross, 2-1, on October 10 and Notre Dame, 3-2, on October 15. PC also posted a 2-1 triumph at No. 17 Massachusetts on October 31 and most recently defeated Brown, 4-3, on November 17. Last season, the Friars posted a 3-3 record in one-goal games.

FRIARS ON THE ROAD... Providence College has posted a 4-2 record on the road this season, while outscoring its opponents, 16-11. Most recently, PC was defeated at No. 15 Vermont, 3-0, on November 8. Prior to that, the Friars defeated 15th-ranked Massachusetts, 2-1, on October 31. The Friars also have posted road wins at seventh-ranked Notre Dame and at Bowling Green State (8-2 on 10/23 and 3-1 on 10/24). Last season, the Friars posted a 4-11-3 mark in games away from Schneider Arena.

BEAUDRY NAMED HOCKEY EAST GOALTENDER OF THE MONTH... Alex Beaudry was named Hockey East Goaltender of the Month for October. Beaudry is the first Friar to earn a league monthly honor since Tyler Sims was named Hockey East Goaltender of the Month in December, 2005. Beaudry finished the month of October with a 4-2 record, a 2.01 goals against average and a .939 save percentage. He recorded 31 saves in a 3-2 win at No. 7 Notre Dame on October 15 and stopped a career-high 47 shots, including 20 in the third period to lead the Friars to a 2-1 victory at No. 17 UMass on October 31. Beaudry, who was named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week twice in October, held opponents to two goals or fewer in five of the six games he played in. He has helped the Friars jump out to a 6-3 start, including a 4-1 mark on the road.

TIMELY SCORING... In three of their six victories this season, the Friars have scored late goals in the second and third period. The Friars scored with 1:18 left in the second period in their 2-1 victory over Holy Cross on October 10. On October 15, PC posted a 3-2 win at No. 7 Notre Dame thanks to a goal with 3:46 left in the third period. The Friars also scored with 3:46 left in the third period to break a 1-1 tie and post a 3-1 triumph at Bowling Green on October 24. In addition, Providence also has scored in the first five minutes of the opening period in four of its six wins.

FAMILY TIES... Providence College freshmen Chris Rooney (Canton, Mass.) and Alex Velischek (Kinnelon, N.J.) are sons of former Friar hockey greats. Rooney is the son of former Friar, Steve Rooney. Steve Rooney scored the game-winning goal as the Friars defeated Boston College, 2-1, in double overtime in the inaugural Hockey East championship game in 1985. Steve, who finished his collegiate career with 124 career points, went on to play in the NHL for the Montreal Canadiens team that claimed the 1986 Stanley Cup title. Alex is the son of former Friar Randy Velischek, who is one of the best defensemen to play at the College. He was named ECAC Player of the year in and 1982-83 earned All-America honors. Randy, who helped the Friars to the 1981 ECAC championship and two NCAA Tournament appearances (1981, 1983), played 10 seasons in the NHL (509 games). He played for Minnesota, New Jersey and Quebec.

FROM THE LAND OF 10,000 LAKES TO THE OCEAN STATE... The 2009-10 Friar squad has six players from Minnesota, more than any other state or province. Last season, Matt Bergland (Faribault) and Rob Maloney (Eagan) were the representatives on the squad from Minnesota. In addition, David Brown (Centennial, Colo.) played high school hockey in Minnesota. This season, the team will have four more players from the "Land of 10,000 Lakes." They are: Willie Hess (Lino Lakes), Aaron Jamnick (Hibbing), Tyler Landman (Roseau) and Billy Simon (Burnsville).

OCEAN STATE CONNECTION... The 2009-10 men's hockey team has a strong contingent of Rhode Islanders. In addition to four players, Head Coach Tim Army (East Providence) and Assistant Coach David Berard (Coventry) also hail from the Ocean State. The Rhode Islanders on this season's team are: seniors David Cavanagh (Warwick) and John Cavanagh (Warwick), junior Eric Baier (North Kingstown) and sophomore Justin Gates (Cranston).

FRIAR ALUMNI UPDATE... Two Providence College alumni are currently playing in the NHL. Fernando Pisani '00 is playing for the Edmonton Oilers, while Hal Gill '97, who helped the Pittsburgh Penguins to the 2009 Stanley Cup title, is currently skating with the Montreal Canadiens. In addition, there are two former Friars who will play an integral part on U.S.A. men's hockey team at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Brian Burke '77, who is the general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, will serve as the general manager of Team U.S.A. Ron Wilson '77, the head coach of the Maple Leafs, will be the head coach of Team U.S.A. Lou Lamoriello '63, former student-athlete, head coach and athletic director at PC, is the current President and General Manager of the New Jersey Devils. Lamoriello was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fall on November 9, 2009 in Toronto, Ontario.
